Inspired by Percy Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound, András
Cséfalvay presents a three-act animated video opera exploring
humanity’s pursuit of unlimited energy and the costs of progress.
Through mythological figures—Prometheus, Asia, and Cosmia—
the opera delves into nuclear energy debates, ecological
dilemmas, and the balance between knowledge and domination.
Set against a backdrop inspired by the Bátaapáti nuclear waste
repository in Hungary, the characters debate utopian visions of
transitioning from nuclear fission to fusion, examining
humanity’s unsustainable demands. Prometheus promises
boundless energy in exchange for freedom, raising questions
about the path forward and its implications. The opera blends
conceptual art with experimental music, using mytho-poetry and
speculative storytelling to reflect on culture, technology, and
climate challenges. Local children’s voices are woven into the
soundscape, adding a collaborative, immersive element that
deepens its exploration of humanity's impact on nature.
